Big Fat Indian Wedding

The quintessential Indian wedding starts with a bang and ends with a bang. My visit to my childhood friend’s wedding in her “pink hometown”, Jaipur, made me realize that Indian royal wedding is generally a long drawn affair, with ceremonies often lasting for more than a few days.  Being a daughter of the land of Maharajas; Nadia, my friend, chose one of the most prestigious palaces for her marriage celebrations and sacred ceremonies, which was witnessed by me and many other people and is surely a treasured memory. It was a colorful, noisy and a rousing experience. Indian wedding marks the beginning of a new relationship, not just between two individuals but also between two families. As most other marriages in India, their marriage was also been arranged by their family members after reviewing the date and the time.

Beholding a palace wedding was a mesmerizing experience for me. The moment I stepped into the premises, I was in a different world altogether. A long drive through the lush beautiful lawns cascading with fountains led me to the main palace building. One of the best allurement I found were the after marriage fun games, where both the bride and groom’s families were present. These games help both the families to know each other better and forge a lifelong relationship. We also had a “Joota Churai” ceremony where the sisters in laws try to steal the groom’s shoes (joota) and in return, they demand money to release them. This money is a token of love from the groom’s family.
Sometimes I go completely abashed to see that the culture of arranged marriages has still survived modernization and industrialization in India. The whole celebration was grand and the all the relatives from both of their families wore gorgeous traditional clothes, however the most wonderful dresses were worn by the bride and the groom and looking definitely stunning. The unmitigated preparations were done by Minar Travels and they absolutely made the celebration a lifetime event.
